Autism / Austistic Spectrum Disorders
Children and adults with autism / autism spectrum disorders see the world differently from a different perspective to others and this can make life challenging for parents, teachers and others who may be involved in their care. There are already excellent groups in the Netherlands for families with children with special needs, autism and autism spectrum disorders however, these groups are Dutch and the information provided is in the Dutch language. As a new comer to a foreign language country and coping with the challenges of being away from your familiar network, this may be one more challenge you may not feel comfortable with.
The AAOF is a new voluntary group, which offers a link to support and services for English speaking and Expat families. The AAOF has come about from discussions with parents and expat professionals with an interest in autism spectrum disorders. Through this support group you will be able to meet other families and access information on services available to you both within the Dutch healthcare system or independent practitioners (often expat).
The AAOF is voluntary and membership is free of charge. Any further enquiries should be directed to mail@aaof.info or visit their website.

Special needs
For families with children with other special needs, there is an organisation called MEE who are worth contacting. Although a Dutch organisation, most of the staff speak good English and will be able to help you access financial and educational information and more. While their website is in Dutch, we suggest you call them directly, contact details are on their website. Although they are a national organisation and have offices all over the Netherlands, they are represented in Rotterdam. Their services are free and will be able to advise on any difficulties you may be experiencing.

Financial support
There is a Governmental organisation (PGB) who provide families with financial support for such requirements as special therapy, or tutoring in relation to special needs. Both AAOF and MEE are able to help with information but you can also contact PGB directly. This link is in English and explains about the budget and how to apply for it. They have an office in Rotterdam.

Other support groups
In The Hague, there is a support group for parents of kids with special needs (not only autism). It is called The Hague Support Group and the contact is Nathalie at panat@orange.nl. They are primarily a support network and host coffee mornings for parents and children.
